What Doesn't Kill You Makes You Stronger

I have decided to start over with my blogs. I have been doing them wrong by not adding a life truth to them. My new blogs are going to be about songs and the meaning behind them. I am not going to write only what the song is about, but also what I have learned from it. I will provide all of the lyrics to the song so that you can read them and take from them what you will.

The song that I have chosen to do this week is What Doesn’t Kill You by Kelly Clarkson. I chose this song because it kind of applies to what I have had to deal with in the past.

The song is about a girl getting out of a relationship where the guy in it made her feel like she was worthless, almost close to being nothing. She talks about how she bets that he thinks he is the only one laughing and that she is not happy anymore since he is gone. She comes back saying that she is perfectly happy being alone; that even though he has made her feel terrible at times, she has come back even stronger than she has in the past.

Even though the song is focusing on a relationship, this life lesson can be applied to any situations where someone is trying to make another person feel low. The situation may hurt at times. Whatever is going on might make you feel like you are never going to get through it, but you will. Because you got through it, it will only make you stronger for whatever life throws at you.

Lyrics:

You know the bed feels warmer
Sleeping here alone
You know I dream in color
And do the things I want

You think you got the best of me
Think you've had the last laugh
Bet you think that everything good is gone
Think you left me broken down
Think that I'd come running back
Baby you don't know me, cause you're dead wrong

What doesn't kill you makes you stronger
Stand a little taller
Doesn't mean I'm lonely when I'm alone
What doesn't kill you makes a fighter
Footsteps even lighter
Doesn't mean I'm over cause you're gone

What doesn't kill you makes you stronger, stronger
Just me, myself and I
What doesn't kill you makes you stronger
Stand a little taller
Doesn't mean I'm lonely when I'm alone

You heard that I was starting over with someone new
They told you I was moving on over you

You didn't think that I'd come back
I'd come back swinging
You try to break me, but you see

What doesn't kill you makes you stronger
Stand a little taller
Doesn't mean I'm lonely when I'm alone
What doesn't kill you makes a fighter
Footsteps even lighter
Doesn't mean I'm over cause you're gone

What doesn't kill you makes you stronger, stronger
Just me, myself and I
What doesn't kill you makes you stronger
Stand a little taller
Doesn't mean I'm lonely when I'm alone

Thanks to you I got a new thing started
Thanks to you I'm not the broken-hearted
Thanks to you I'm finally thinking about me
You know in the end the day you left was just my beginning
In the end...

What doesn't kill you makes you stronger
Stand a little taller
Doesn't mean I'm lonely when I'm alone
What doesn't kill you makes a fighter
Footsteps even lighter
Doesn't mean I'm over cause you're gone

[2x]
What doesn't kill you makes you stronger, stronger
Just me, myself and I
What doesn't kill you makes you stronger
Stand a little taller
Doesn't mean I'm lonely when I'm alone

  1. There is so much truth to this song! Coming out of a relationship that basically just makes you feel worthless can do so much damage, knowing from experience. But this type of pain only brings you closer to knowing who you are and what you're looking for in life, and for that reason you have to take all of your experiences in stride, knowing that there will always be something amidst the agony that's only going to benefit you. Romans 5:3 says "And not only that, but let us exult while in tribulations, since we know that tribulation produces endurance." On that note, maybe T-Swift needs to take a few pointers on how to handle this sort of thing. Just saying.

  2. I'm happy to see that you found a new blog topic and might I add, a much more interesting one! I am definitely looking forward to reading your new posts each week, songs are something I always think about! What does this song mean? Does it mean the same thing to someone else as it does to me? There is so much mystery behind lyrics. I find it kind of funny when songs don't mean anything close to what we think they mean. Nice representation of the song Stronger because honestly before now, I had no clue what this song meant, nor had I given much thought to the meaning.

  3. Kimmy,
This idea of a blog is super amazing! I believe behind each song has an interesting story behind it. As teenagers, we escape with music and it has become so big in today’s society. But Kelly Clarkson is such an incredible artist. This song is so pure and true. Relationships are incredibly hard at times, and I believe she was right on with her lyrics. When something does work out, be positive about it, and you will move forward stronger. Great blog! 

  4. I am glad you shared this with us because this is defiantly a life lesson that each and every one of us have experienced sometime in our lives. I know that everyone has been through something whether it is break up or something different and they have realized that they can get stronger from that situation or they can get through anything. You made a great point and hopefully people will read this and learn that situations we go through do make us stronger and that we can get through anything. Thanks for sharing!
